What we keep on your machine
Which cookies this site sets, what each category is actually for, and how to turn off the ones that aren't holding your cart together.
What a cookie is, briefly
A small text file a website asks your browser to keep, and hands back the next time you visit. Some are unavoidable — without them a shopping cart can't remember what you put in it between one page and the next. Others exist to count visits or to follow you somewhere else afterwards.
This page covers cookies and the things that work like them: local storage, pixels, tags and similar technologies. We'll call the lot of them cookies rather than listing the mechanisms every time.
What we use them for
Four categories. The first is the only one the site genuinely cannot work without.
- Strictly necessary
- Your cart, your session, sign-in, checkout, fraud prevention and security.Set by Shopify, our ecommerce platform. Turning these off breaks buying anything.
- Functional
- Remembering choices — the country you're shopping from, a dismissed message, your preferences.
- Analytics
- How many people visit, which pages they read, where a journey falls apart.Aggregate patterns. We're not interested in what any individual did.
- Marketing
- Measuring whether an advert worked, and showing our ads on other sites.These are the ones that follow you around. They're also the ones you can turn off with no loss of function.
Who else sets them
Some cookies on this site are set by companies we use rather than by us: Shopify runs the store and the checkout, our payment providers handle the payment step, and our analytics and advertising partners set the last two categories above.
Those companies act as processors for the parts they do on our behalf, and as controllers of their own data where they collect it for their own purposes. Their own notices govern that second part, and we don't control what they say in them.
The full, current list depends on which apps and tools are switched on at any moment, which changes. If you want to know exactly what is running today, ask us and we'll tell you.
Turning them off
Several routes, and they don't all do the same thing.
Use the privacy choices page
Our "Your privacy choices" page is where to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for targeted advertising, including under California's CCPA/CPRA and the equivalent laws in other states.
Turn on Global Privacy Control
GPC is a signal your browser or an extension sends automatically to every site you visit. Where the law requires us to honour it, we treat it as an opt-out — you don't have to tell each site separately.
Change your browser settings
Every major browser can block or delete cookies, and can treat third-party cookies differently from first-party ones. It's under Privacy in the settings. Blocking everything will break the cart and the checkout — that's not us being awkward, it's what the cart is made of.
How long they last
Session cookies are deleted the moment you close the browser. Persistent ones stay for a set period — anywhere from a day to a couple of years depending on the job — and are then deleted, unless you clear them sooner. You can always clear them sooner.
Changes to this page
We'll update it when what we use changes, and the date at the top of the page moves with it. If a change materially affects what you'd want to decide about, we won't rely on you noticing a date — we'll say so.
